May is National Physical Fitness & Sports Month, a timely reminder that staying active is one of the most powerful choices we can make for our health. For Guam, that reminder hits especially close to home. According to the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey conducted in Guam, only 20.9% of the 2,126 adult respondents met the recommended levels of aerobic and muscle-strengthening physical activity, indicating that 79.1% of adults did not meet these guidelines. With obesity rates exceeding 35% and cancer remaining a significant burden on the island, these patterns make one thing clear, physical activity is central to turning the tide on Guam's public health challenges.

Regular physical activity benefits both the body and mind in ways that matter every day:

  • Longer Life & Disease Prevention
    • - Lowers risk of heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, and some cancers
    • - Increased chances of living longer
  • Healthy Weight & Body Strength
    • - Burns calories to manage weight
    • - Maintain muscle strength as you age
    • - Builds strong bones and prevents osteoporosis
  • Brain & Mental Health
    • - Increases energy and reduces fatigue
    • - Improves memory and brain function
    • - Releases endorphins to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Daily Function & Energy
    • - Improves sleep quality
    • - Helps relieve chronic pain
    • - Enhances flexibility, endurance, and overall performance
  • Appearance & Well-being
    • - Improves skin health and circulation
    • - Helps you feel more confident and balanced

A well-rounded routine should include four types of exercise: aerobic for heart and lung health, strength training to build muscle, stretching for flexibility, and balance exercises to prevent falls. Together, they keep your body strong and capable at every age.

According to Stanford Medicine, physical activity creates positive changes across nearly every organ and system in the body, improving metabolism, strengthening the immune system, and reducing inflammation. It has even been described as one of the most powerful "medicines" available, with the ability to protect against a wide range of diseases.

This National Physical Fitness & Sports Month, let Guam's own health story be the motivation to move. Whether it's a walk along Tumon, a gym session, or a game of pickleball with the family, every step counts. The science is clear and the need is real, regular physical activity is not just good for the individual, it is essential for the health of our entire community.

Start small, stay consistent, and encourage those around you to do the same. A healthier Guam starts with each of us choosing to move.
