Get Screened! | Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
March 11, 2025

In 2022, colorectal cancer was the third most diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Guam. It is commonly diagnosed amongst individuals aged 65 to 74 years old. At StayWell Insurance, the health and wellbeing of our members is our number one priority. This Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, we want to raise awareness about colorectal cancer, highlight the importance of regular screening, and how early detection can save lives by catching the disease before it becomes more advanced. Taking proactive steps toward screening can make a significant difference in the fight against this preventable disease.
What is Colorectal Cancer?
Colorectal cancer, which includes cancer of the colon and rectum, is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Guam. It develops when abnormal cells in the colon or rectum begin to grow uncontrollably, forming tumors that can spread to other parts of the body. While the exact cause of colorectal cancer is not always clear, risk factors include age, family history, personal history of inflammatory bowel disease, and certain lifestyle factors such as diet, smoking, and physical inactivity. Colorectal cancer often does not show symptoms in its early stages, which emphasizes the importance of getting screened and early detection.
The Importance of Screening
Screening for colorectal cancer is important because it helps detect cancer before symptoms appear, and it can identify precancerous growths, called polyps, that can be removed before they turn into cancer. Regular screening has been shown to reduce the risk of death from colorectal cancer by detecting it early when treatment options are more effective. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends colorectal cancer screening in all adults aged 45 to 75. This recommendation applies to individuals who do show an increased risk for colorectal cancer.
There are various screening options available, including coloscopies, stool tests, and flexible sigmoidoscopies. While the thought of undergoing screening may be uncomfortable for some, the benefits far outweigh the potential risks. It is important to meet with your doctor and discuss which test is suitable for you. They will also help guide you with the process and what to expect from the procedures. With proper screening, colorectal cancer can be detected early, leading to better outcomes and survival rates. Do not wait for the symptoms – schedule your screening today and help ensure a healthier future.
